The purpose of the Task Force and Advisory Council is to design, implement, and guide a coordinated national approach to primary care EMR data access and use, with infrastructure and processes that are reusable, scalable, and sustainable.
Objectives
Achieving near real-time (data updated <7 days) data extraction from diverse primary care EMRs to support operations, local QI, research and system change.

A national common data standard (including de-identification), as well as a transparent and efficient process to update the standard over time.

Building an ongoing community of practice to share code, communication materials, and templates.
A national approach to negotiating with EMR vendors.

How was this Task Force initiated?

This Task Force was initiated in 2025, after discussions with many academics, staff and interest-holders working in primary care. An urgent need was identified to advance our collective ability to work with near real-time primary care EMR data, for a wide variety of uses: operational, QI, research and to support system change.
What is the relationship between this Task Force and the Canadian Primary Care Research Consortium Data Pillar?

The Task Force has begun its work, but with the intention of winding down within ~18 months and then transitioning to a permanent home in the Canadian Primary Care Research Consortium Data Pillar.
What is the relationship between this Task Force and past and existing projects and initiatives that work with primary care EMR data?

This Task Force will build on collective past experience from the past two decades, from numerous projects. The vision is to build infrastructure, knowledge and community through this Task Force, which will transition to CPCRC in time, that supports many projects.
